Obesity is one of the greatest public health problems associated with modern life. It’s impact on health has been compared to that of smoking. In many countries the incidence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. The increase in children is particularly concerning, with as many as 8% of 6-year-olds and 15% of 15-year-olds in the UK already clinically obese.
One of the main links between obesity and ill health is a significant increase in the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. Obesity also increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke, some cancers and osteoarthritis.
The MRC Centre for Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases (MRC CORD) has been developed to enable wide-ranging research into the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity and related diseases
